A Brief History

The Leon Springs Farmers Market opens each Saturday morning on the grounds of  Leon Springs Baptist Church to cater to the sensitive needs of the good people surrounding Leon Springs.

Each Saturday, vendors bring their goods to a friendly environment  where one is greeted with a friendly smile and one on one service is still available.

After visiting with residents in the LS neighborhoods, while running for SA City Council District #8 in 2007, I decided that a Farmer's Market/ Urban Harvest was definitely needed in Leon Springs.  We were lacking a community activity/ event where families could come together and enjoy the outdoors and each others company, while purchasing green products.

There is much development in the Leon Springs community...scenic views are being taken away and many new families are now calling LS home...by providing the families of LS something to look forward to every Saturday, I thought that our cultural and historical heritage could be retained...thus providing our children memories that can be cherished for a lifetime.

I have dedicated my time to the creation (founded Aug 2007) and maintaining of the Market and look forward to it's continued growth and enjoyment by the residents of LS and surrounding area.  My family lives in Leon Springs and I truly care about the environment, quality of life and the direction that our community is headed.  I want my daughter to enjoy her community as it continues to grow but, orderly growth for a livable and sustainable community is certainly needed. My wife and daughter are regular visitors of the Market and it's truly a joy to see them and so many other folks smiling, visiting and buying earthly products.  Folks don't have to drive into town anymore to enjoy an urban harvest, it's right here in Leon Springs!

The Leon Springs Farmer's Market vendors offer a variety of edibles, from fresh produce to honey, nuts, breads, jams and jellies.  Herbal bath products along with plants and herbs are also available.  Live music and a neighborly spirit are always found at the LSFM.

A Brief History of Leon Springs

The Leon Springs area was originally mapped by Spanish explorers and was frequented by traveling bands of Coahuiltacans, Tonkawas, Lipan Apache and Comanche Indians.

Today, Leon Springs is a suburb of San Antonio. Several of the buildings constructed from the mid 1800's into the early part of the 1900's are still standing today and utilized as stores and businesses. The springs that flowed in this area and made it a desirable place to live have pretty much dried up and Leon Creek only flows after heavy prolonged rains. Leon Springs is more a collective name for the various communities now found in the area.

Leon Springs, Texas, is located northwest of San Antonio on Interstate 10. Originally founded a fair distance from San Antonio on the stagecoach road running north, Leon Springs is now surrounded by the larger city. Not actually an incorporated city, it is the area settled around a community built around the stagecoach track and railroad in the mid to late 1800's.
